OR has a major role to play in healthcare both in administrative logistics and in effectively and efficiently providing treatment. For example, the studies of congestion relating to waiting lists concern complex non-stationary queuing networks. Part of the challenge in exploring the formidable mathematical issues which result is the need for solutions which are implementable in real-life scenarios. Many healthcare issues generate extremely complex OR problems or, more accurately, a complex interaction of several complex OR problems. Little progress has been made in understanding such interactions. The initiative will seek to underpin the pioneering applied work currently being undertaken within the consortium by rigorous analysis of the mathematical properties of such complex scenarios with the goal of informing the development of automated systems to address them.
